If you’ve noticed that water is pooling around your A/C unit, you probably have an air conditioning leak. Part of how an air conditioner works involves pulling water out of humid air. This water from the air condenses into liquid, where it’s generally drained away from the unit and discharged in a safe outdoor location. Some common issues that cause leakage include:
- A cracked or rusted drain pan or condensate drain. If the drainage system cracks or breaks, it can leak out water, which pools beneath the unit, where it can potentially damage your A/C.
- Dirty evaporator coil. The evaporator coils, where the water accumulates and is drained away, are prone to becoming clogged up with dirt and dust. If they aren’t cleaned routinely, the blockage can obstruct the flow of water into the drain pan, causing an air conditioning leak.
- Frozen evaporator coil. If the evaporator coils are covered in ice, it can melt and cause an air conditioning leak. The cause of the ice formation is usually either a dirty air filter, or low refrigerant levels. Ice in your A/C requires professional air conditioning repair.
If you have an air conditioning leak, the dripping water can cause serious damage to your A/C unit’s electrical and mechanical components. At All Done HVAC, our knowledgeable staff have years of training and experience in safely figuring out the cause of leaks and other A/C problems, so that we can perform effective repairs to get things working again.
